Question 4: Where Are You Going?
Posted by Moses on May 10, 2007
Where are you going?, is the fourth and final question for the Babylon 5, television series. It’s been several weeks since I wrote the previous article, Question 3, Why are you here? I’ve gone through a lot of changes over the last few weeks. Some of these changes involved making hard decisions about my relationship with my now ex-girlfriend and my career. I also took some time to revisit what I want to ensure that I am moving along the path that God has for me.
With my life in flux, I found it extremely difficult to write this article. Essentially, I had to make some decisions about my own life and decide where I was going before I could write to others about how to understand the question where are you going?
The question is asking you to open your mind to consider all of the possibilities available to you. These possibilities exist because you know who you are, what you want and why you are here. Because you understand and accept yourself you are free to follow new ideas that flow from your purpose. Although it is wonderful that you have these possibilities open to you, you must choose among them. Even failing to make a choice is a choice.
In the episode of Bablylon 5, where the question where are you going was asked, one of the lead characters had to decide between continuing to listen to others and be enamored by all of the possibilities they offered him or courageously choosing his own path. In that single moment he evolved into something greater than himself and opened the door to a better future for himself and those who chose to follow him.
Like that character, we too must decide what is best for us and to make the choice to lead our lives based on what we want, who we are and why we are here. If we fail to do that we will constantly feel like we are compromising a core piece of ourselves in order to please others who are not as vested in our future as we are. You have probably experienced this feeling in your life. It most likely occurred that one time when you yielded to someone else’s idea of what was best for you even though you did not agree.
Although the question is fundamentally about the future, you must answer it in the present. Focusing solely on the future is a dangerous and ultimately fruitless effort. You only have control over the present. To remain empowered you need to focus on making your choice in the present to ensure that your present becomes the future you desire. The future will come whether you make conscious decisions or not. Take the time to make sure that you are making conscious decisions to make your present the life that you truly desire. The future will come and take care of itself. I caution that this does not mean that you shouldn’t prepare for the future by saving money for retirement etc, but instead to look at a scenario like retirement differently. Think about why you want to retire and if you decide that it is something that you really want why wait? Why not make it possible to retire as early as possible rather than waiting for a future that is not guaranteed? You are only guaranteed the present moment why not make it the very best it could be? Make sure that you are working towards the desires of you heart now because you are not guaranteed any more time than right now.
I really appreciate everyone’s patience in working through these questions. I know it has taken some time, but I would rather delay to write a better article than to write earlier simply to have more posts.
As always I wish you the best and God Bless.
