Question 3: Why Are You Here?

Posted by Moses on Apr 18, 2007

It’s been almost a week since I started this series, so I thought I’d take a little time to do a quick refresher before addressing question 3, Why Are You Here?

I am exploring 4 questions that were part of the overall them of the television series Babylon 5. These questions are part of the series’ underlying story arc and set the stage for one of most engaging and original science fiction shows ever produced. Here are the questions

  1. Who Are You?
  2. What Do You Want?
  3. Why Are You Here?
  4. Where Are You Going?

I have recently begun watching some of my favorite episodes when I realized that these 4 questions are fundamental questions that we all ask ourselves at one time or another. The first 3 seasons of the show focused on the first 2 questions it wasn’t until the 4th season that the third question was asked.

Why Are You Here? This is a fundamental question of your existence. Why are you here at this moment in time? It appears to be a difficult and confusing question at different points in life, but I have recently discovered it is actually quite simple. All this question is asking is, what do you want to accomplish in your time on Earth? Do you want to create a loving family? End world hunger? Create a new form of clean, renewable energy?

Note: Use of his/her pronoun is designed to protect the reader from spoilers

In the series, Babylon 5, this question was asked of one of the main characters at a moment when the character was on the edge of existence between life and death. This character was then asked 2 questions by the first being in existence. The first question was obviously, why are you here. The second question was “Do you have anything worth living for?” and was asked after the first being in existence didn’t receive an acceptable answer to his first question. It was only after discovering what the main character had to live for (finding his/her purpose) did he/she find his/her way back to a new life.

Thus it is my believe that to uncover why you are, you need to understand and accept yourself and then find your purpose. I have written a number of posts about my journey to find my own purpose. Finding your purpose is a unique journey for each individual. Some people may find it by trying Steve Pavlina’s technique that I described in my article My Ministry: Part 1 - Origin. Others my go back to their childhood and explore the career choices that motivated them as child as the Interchange Desk suggests. But, I suspect that there are as many paths to finding your purpose as there are people in the world.

I will offer some thoughts to keep in mind when you are searching for your purpose

  1. Remember that your are uniquely and wonderfully made
  2. You have a unique life and a destiny that only you can fulfill
  3. You can have your hearts desire
  4. Your life is important to the direction the world will take

Good Luck in finding your propose. In the final segment I will tackle the utlimate question of Where are you going?
