Overcoming A Performance Plateau

Posted by Moses on Jul 2, 2007

Three Sticks has done remarkably well for a blog that is 6 months old with somewhat sporadic postings. It took in an average of $0.53 per day last month (it pays for itself now) and has a technorati ranking in the 70,000’s. There has been a steady increase in revenue and reduction in technorati rank (lower is better). I am especially grateful to God and my readers for the excellent numbers.

However at this point in time I feel as though am at a performance plateau. I do not think this is a case of me needing to renew my commitment. A performance plateau occurs when your current efforts no longer provides growth in your life or endeavors. I am experiencing a performance plateau in my career. This stems from my time being spread over too many efforts. First, I have my day job, which is not extremely demanding, however the after hours activities required by the company I work for can absorb a significant amount of time. Second, I have Miles Ahead, which requires more attention than I have given it lately. And lastly, I have Three Sticks, which helps me to fulfill the purpose that I believe God has for me.

Like most people who have a side job or activity that the love, I need the income from my day job. I want to continue with Miles Ahead and SafetyNet and also to continue to write and give back with Three Sticks.

Here is my plan to overcome my performance plateau

1. Revisit my yearly plan for myself. This will remind me of what I though was important at the start of the year.

2. Revise my plan to create goals in the area of my career that can be accomplished by December 31, 2007. This allows me to realign my efforts to what is important to me now and gives me a limited amount of time to accomplish those goals. This creates a sense of urgency and importance in achieving those goals.

3. Prioritize my time in relationship to my 3 main career activities — Day Job, Miles Ahead, Three Sticks.

4. Continue to move forward in faith.

I believe that by taking stock of my current situation and having a serious heart-to-heart with myself over what is truly important I will be able to overcome this performance plateau and reach the heights that my heart desires.
